Rats...the dog!

It’s been an eventful week. It’s all been about my dog Rats (yes, it is a silly name but I wanted to call him Toby – not my fault my mum thought he looked like a rat), well, I have some bad news. Don’t worry, he hasn’t died! Unfortunately he has been diagnosed with dog diabetes. Apparently, dogs and cats can only have their diabetes treated through daily insulin injections, and that is what my mum and I have to do.

So every morning at 8.30, we have to find ways of injecting the dog, while trying not to hurt him, lose him or upset him. Have you ever tried to inject a dog daily? It isn’t easy, there should be a sitcom based on it – was there ever a vet sitcom, or just that real life thing with Rolf Harris?

Today’s injections went surprisingly well actually, we warmed the insulin up and got him while he was eating breakfast – he is starting to be wary of anyone coming near him while he is eating cause he thinks he is going to get needled, which he is.

This has affected lots of things though. Firstly, mum and I have to coordinate our diaries so that neither of us are away at the same time – although at the moment it is a bit of a two person job, keeping the dog still while trying to inject him. Also, it means I have to get up at 8am every day (more of a problem when I want a lie in) because he has to be injected (by an aware person) by about 8.30am. I never wanted to get used to being up early but now it seems I have to because of a dog, how stupid is that!

If anyone has any tips on how to inject a dog, swiftly and without problems then let me know, it isn’t easy and I defy anyone who says it is!
